The IH (International-Dresser) 165 crawler loader had a pretty small machine population.  Because of the cost of product research and development I never looked into handling the Dresser 165 steering clutches.  It was only when we were contacted by an owner with a steering clutch problem that we got involved in researching how we could help and how we could keep him from having to spend several thousand dollars on his steering clutch repair.  As it turned out, we could supply many of his needs by parts already on hand.

The International-Dresser 165 originally used 11 bimetallic discs with 10 steel separator plates (for each clutch.)  These were the same steel plates (P/N 43728D) as used in the TD6 crawler made during the 1940's, 50's and 60's.  Knowing that the Dresser 165 used the same steel discs, we checked on other similarities.  The TD6 Bimetallic disc would fit the brake drum for the 165 but they were thinner than the bimetallic discs used in the 165.  This meant that more TD6 discs would be needed to satisfy the steering clutch stack height requirements of the 165 loader.  By carefully measuring, we determined that we could replace the 11 Bimetallic and 10 steel separator plates used in the 165 loader with 14 Bimetallic discs and 13 steel plates from the earlier style TD6 clutches.  (The difference in stack height was a mere .002")

We also discovered that we had new steering clutch pressure plates for the 165 loader.  They were the same pressure plates that we have manufactured for the TD6!
