D3 STEERING CLUTCHES

The D3 and D3B and D3C models were originally dry type steering clutches and changed to the oil steering clutches later in their series.

The Dry Clutch D3 79U series and the D3B 23Y series used composite friction discs, qty (7) 8E4075 (earlier part numbers of 6Y4912 or 6S3183) per clutch and qty (6) steel separator plates (2H6936) per steering clutch. You will almost always have to replace the fiber discs, but the steel plates are usually reusable. If the steel plates are damaged, by scoring, warping, or just plain old wear they should be replaced.  (Oil Type Clutch parts can be found below the Dry Type Clutch parts info)

Occasionally we get calls regarding "complete" steering clutch kits. The term, "Complete Kit", is misleading because it implies that the parts supplier knows what you need for your clutch. They don't!! (And...not all"Kits" being offered by different parts suppliers are even the same!!)

We take the menu approach. This gives you, the equipment owner or repair shop, the right to select only the items that you need to make your repairs. You're the boss!

6S3183_6Y4912_8E4075_DISC.JPG (215439 bytes)   NEW    After a few years producing and providing the standard fiber disc, we have now produced a steel based
friction disc to strengthen your clutch and improve its potential for long term reliability.  Similar to the bimetallic disc, the center steel plate is sandwiched between two fiber wear surfaces.  Anticipating a higher volume of demand, we have been able to keep the cost very close to the earlier style fiber disc.             $19.00           The increased cost for these heavier duty discs is $49.00 per clutch   (A small price to pay for teeth that will not break off!  )

Oil Clutch style of steering clutches used different discs and different quantities.  One complete steering clutch used Qty 9 friction discs 6Y7914 (Earlier P/n's 5K8617 or 3A2858 were replaced by the 6Y7914) and Qty 9 Steel discs P/n 5K8616.  There was also a special plate, P/n 5V0593, a little heavier than the normal friction disc, and one per clutch was used.  (earlier P/n's replaced by the 5V0593 were 4K1333, 9K5484, and 2Y5134)

The "T" bar puller can be used with the center  push-bolt or a
hydraulic cylinder.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY4.JPG (186527 bytes)
We have a lot of misc pins
laying around but this chunk
of steel fit perfectly.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY5.JPG (181703 bytes)
On a D2 or a D4 the clutches
are pressed off end of bevel
gear cross shaft.  On
D5 D6 D7's you press off a tapered splined stub shaft and flange.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY6.JPG (185380 bytes)
Removal of bearing cage and
bearing makes disassembly
easier.
Don't forget to remove set
screws in retainer nut!!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY7.JPG (188198 bytes)
When you press down on the compression tool you want something to keep the studs in place so get a spacer to keep studs from dropping when you turn the clutch over.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY8.JPG (190987 bytes)
You can use a press like we usually do but unless you do a lot of these clutches a simple piece of all-thread is all that you need.  Anchor it through your work bench or table.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY9.JPG (192568 bytes)
Place compression tool and add a washer to disperse the pressure over the face of the tool.  Otherwise you can end up with a concave tool!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY10.JPG (187226 bytes)
With your spacer underneath to keep your studs in place (shown above)
and compression tool on top
you are ready to compress the springs.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY11.JPG (177407 bytes)
As the springs compress the end of the studs will gain clearance until the locks
are free from the retainers.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY12.JPG (185189 bytes)
Remove all of the locks and be careful not to lose any!
When you put these back in you apply grease to the locks
keep them in place.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY13.JPG (184208 bytes)
Release all pressure and remove compression tool.  You can now remove retainers and springs.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY14.JPG (182223 bytes)
Now is time to check measurements on springs.
if any are shorter than the others by 1/8" it should be replaced. It is probably a good practice just to replace them due to low cost and the labor involved if you have to go back in there again!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY15.JPG (186083 bytes) CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY16.JPG (188792 bytes)
Now you can remove all the parts for inspection of discs and components.

Minor rippling on the inner drum is fine.

Make sure stud holes on pressure plate are not wallowed out or worn too far below the surface.
